Evanston, WY

We never made it out of Wyoming today, but we went from the northeast corner to the southwest corner before calling it quits.

It was a great journey across the state starting with lots of wildlife sightings - saw two deer with two fawns as we started out and then there were numerous pronghorn in the fields.  We had taken breakfast with us when we left the Hampton Inn and we enjoyed a picnic breakfast at the Powder River rest area.  Just us, our food and the flies.  We forgot how many flies, yellow jackets, crickets, etc. there are out here.  That's the nice thing about Reno - no bugs!

We were on the interstate for a little while, but then went cross-country on Wyoming highways, US roads, etc.  As we climbed over the Big Horn Mountains, we saw some magnificent scenery.  We stopped to admire the cliffs at one point and couldn't figure how why we were a little lightheaded.  Then we saw the sign for the Powder River Pass at 9666' :-).  Cars parked along the roadside and it didn't look like good hiking country, then we spotted a climber on the cliffs.  JT and George III would have loved this country - one good climbing cliff after another.  The town of Ten Sleep must have to be world famous for climbing.  It's named Ten Sleep because the Indians counted distances in "sleeps", so it took ten days to cross the Big Horn.

I took some great pictures of the area and we were very impressed with the scenery.  Unfortunately, I lost my camera at one of the stops and didn't realize it until we were long gone.  After the Big Horn Mountains, we went through the Wind River Canyon.  It was really weird because we were going down hill to the south and the river was flowing the opposite way to the north.  It was an optical illusion caused by the fact that the Wind River was flowing out of a reservoir to the south.  Coming out of the Big Horn Mountains and the Wind River Canyon, we were in the wide open spaces of the Big Horn Basin - no mountains, just range land and wide open spaces.

It was another case of no gas stations when we were getting low, but we managed to make it to I-80 and gassed up at Green River - another 16.5 gallon fill-up.  Then it was on to Evanston which is almost on the Wyoming border.

Tomorrow, we heading for West Wendover, NV where we have reservations at the Rainbow Casino.  Going to try golf there either Monday afternoon or Tuesday morning, depending on our schedule.
