Gillette, WY

No, that's not a "why", but a WY for Wyoming!  We left Carson, ND after the service and reception to head back home.  Thought you might like to see the entrance to Carson off ND Hwy 21.

This morning we drove over to Elgin for breakfast - there is no cafe or restaurant in Carson - population approximately 300.  Good breakfast and then back to the motel.  We had decided to leave in the afternoon since there wasn't anything planned.  We helped set up the community center and then left for St Theresa's - originally there wasn't anything planned there; however, the priest held a small service at the church before going out to the cemetery.  At the cemetery, the priest again held a short service and then the urn was placed in the same area with her mother and father.

Back to Carson where everyone gathered for a reception.  More food than you could shake a stick at and some really great desserts.  Fun talking to everyone and getting acquainted with Vi's relatives (and I guess mine by extension).  We had already checked out of the El Rancho Motel earlier and left Carson to head south.

The fields of sunflowers are really beautiful this time of year with the flowers in full bloom.

The fields seem to stretch for miles with the yellow flowers blowing in the wind with their heads turned toward the sun.  I understand that people plan their visits to North Dakota to view the sunflowers - kind of like the leaf peepers who flock to the Northeast in the fall.

Taking US 85 south out of Bowman is a straight shot down to the intersection with I-90.  Although we normally don't like interstates, it was a convenient way to get over to Gillette, Wyoming.  One of the hazards is running into farm equipment travelling from one area to another.  As you can see, there is not a heck of a lot of room to pass them.  Thankfully, they are very considerate and move over at the first opportunity.

Arrive in Gillette at sunset and checked into a Hampton Inn.  They didn't list a Best Western in Gillette, but when we got off at the Hampton Inn exit, there was a Best Western.  We're not unhappy because our room here is outstanding.  Besides, Kathy has always said that Hampton Inns were the best deal.  We can't help but agree after our experience here.

Leaving Gillette tomorrow, we'll take some back roads across Wyoming and maybe end up in Rock Springs or Evanston.
