Carson, North Dakota
Well, we reached our destination around 1:00 this afternoon. Carson is a small town just west of the time zone change, so we only have one hour difference between home and here. More on Carson later.
Started out from Miles City and stayed on US 12 across Montana and into North Dakota. Nothing but wide open spaces with lots of range land and fields, interspersed with gas wells as we traveled east. We were thinking of playing golf in either Baker, MT or Bowman, ND, but the weather was not conducive. We did check out both nine-hole courses and may play them some time in the future. There certainly wasn't a lot of activity on either course. As you can see below, it's wide open country.
While we were in Bowman, we inquired about some family members; but didn't have much success there, either. As we continued eastward, we stopped in Burt where Vi's father was born. Not much left of the town, a couple of farms and a few abandoned buildings. It's always amazing to see abandoned schools, farms, homes, etc. as people's lives have changed over the years.
As we drove east from Burt, we came across an old cemetery with the name Odessa. Since that was where Vi's grandparents had come from, we stopped to check it out. Unfortunately, none of the names matched anyone we were familiar with.
Checked into the El Rancho Motel in Carson - let's just say it ain't the Ritz, but it's clean and convenient. Met up with Kelly and Marv - Butch's daughter from Seattle and her husband. Good to see them again. Followed them out to a local farm owned by relatives (two generations removed) to get together with some friends and relatives. Afterward, we went to a cemetery way out in the countryside to see the burial places of some of the original members of the Bonogofsky clan. St Vincent's Catholic Church is no longer in existence, but the cemetery is still maintained.
This evening we met with some relatives and friends at a bar/restaurant in Flasher, ND. A little confusing because the time zone between Central and Mountain runs between Carson and Flasher. So when Vi asked what time it was - I said it was 7:00 in Reno, 8:00 in Carson and 9:00 in Flasher.
Tomorrow the memorial service for Butch will be held at 11:00 a.m. in the local church with a reception in the Carson Community Center.
